I was hoping it was a Jap, but judging from the tokai site, I determined either a 89 or 1990 from the seriel number info. The truss cover was a little concerning though and did'nt seem to fall into the jap category. If anyone else can shed some light, it would be much appreciated. Just to note: I have'nt seen the guitar first hand and these are the only pics the seller has sent me. All the info I have provided, is what he has told me - (he does'nt seem to know much about it himself).
Click to expand. Thanks for reviving this necro 2+ yr old thread JP. And welcome to MLP. The OP's ALS example with a 906 prefix quoted above was in fact from 2009 and made in China. While I didn't know it at the time, two Chinese factories were producing these ALS export models, and both used different serial # formats, one with 906 and 907 prefixes and the other with C prefixes. Because I didn't own 1991 or 1994 catalogs at the time, I wrongly assumed ALS models began in 1990 (using Japan serial # date conventions) and not in 1995, as catalogs show (MIK without serial #'s) Hard to say where yours was made JP, as Tokai transitioned from Korea to China in 2005.
Some would call these fakes, but I don't think anyone would fake an export dimple headstock. Maybe The 2 screw white rear switch cover and white control cavity cover hint at possible Korean production. The 1 screw TRC and serial # hint at possible early Chinese production. Without high jacking this thread. I too have just bought a tokai love rock for around £180, just worried it might be a Chinese made model.
The serial number is 0809028 with the 3 screws in the head. It doesn't state on the guitar where it was made,I did a bit of digging and Googled the serial number at it says it was made in Japan but don't agree. I'm just a beginner really even though I've had the odd guitar over the years. Just wondering if anyone can help. It's my first post so please be kind. Hi flyingspud, Wecome to MLP!
Without the benefit of seeing pics, I don't have good news about the country of manufacture, you more or less got what you paid for, I suspect. Your serial # is out of range for 2008 Japan models. Japan LS models have serial #'s embossed into the headstock, whereas China ALS model serial #'s are silkscreened on, in gold color usually, sometimes white. Korean ALS models didn't have serial #'s A 'how to post pics' link can be found here: if you need a more conclusive answer. Sorry to bring back an old thread, I just found this via a google search. I too have what I believe to be a Korean or Chinese Love Rock guitar. The serial number is in small gold writing at the top of the headstock (9061112) other than the words 'Tokai Love Rock Model' on the front of the headstock, there are no other markings anywhere on the guitar.
